DLI secures nearly $315K in back wages for workers in Digi-Key project

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) has finished a state prevailing-wage investigation that secured nearly $315,000 in total back-wages owed to 70 construction workers of a subcontractor involved in the Digi-Key Electronic expansion project in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, during 2018 and 2019. The back-wage amounts ranged from less than $100 to more than $11,000 in payments to individual workers.

DLI found the subcontractor, Millennium Concrete, based in Coralville, Iowa, committed violations, including misclassifying the work employees were performing and paying them lower prevailing-wage rates, failing to pay the required overtime rate to certain workers and making unauthorized deductions from workers' pay. Digi-Key Electronics cooperated with the state investigation.

New MNOSHA Compliance warns of dangers of heat stress

Minnesota OSHA (MNOSHA) Compliance warns those working in hot, humid conditions about the dangers of heat stress and how to prevent it.

Heat stress results from a combination of internal (body) heat production and external heat exposure from the environment. It can occur year-round in foundries, kitchens or laundries, or only a few days during the summer in almost any work setting.

The two most important methods of preventing heat disorders are hydration and acclimatization because they increase the ability of the body to tolerate heat stress. Engineering and administrative controls are important in reducing heat exposure.

Visit the MNOSHA Compliance:  Heat stress webpage to learn more about heat stress and the precautions to take, and to access helpful resources.

Campus Answer Hour sessions generating great questions

DLI and the Workers' Compensation Modernization Program are hosting Campus Answer Hour sessions for five groups of workers' compensation stakeholders:  employers; insurers, self-insurers and third-party administrators; law firms; trading partners; and vocational rehabilitation providers. Since the sessions began in March, participation has been strong and the participants have asked great questions.

Campus Answer Hours are regularly scheduled virtual question and answer sessions about Work Comp Campus, DLI's new workers' compensation claims portal that will go live in August 2020. Campus Answer Hour sessions provide opportunities for those who will use the system to ask questions and get information about Campus.
