Minnesota workers share stories about the detrimental impact of wage theft 

Commissioner Ken Peterson joined Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, a panel of workers, state legislators and labor leaders April 26 at the University of Minnesota to have a roundtable discussion about how wage theft affects workers. During the meeting, workers shared their personal experiences with wage theft and the detrimental impact it has had on their lives. The panel also discussed current efforts to pass legislation that will hold employers that commit wage theft accountable for their failure to pay for work already performed.

Apprenticeship grant application available

The Minnesota Apprenticeship Initiative (MAI) offers grants to employers to expand registered apprenticeship as a workforce development tool in five industries:

• Advanced manufacturing
• Agriculture
• Health care services
• Transportation

A new round of grants is open for application until June 14, 2017. Dozens of Minnesota businesses have already partnered with MAI to create new or expand registered apprenticeship programs.

Twin Cities Suburban Construction Trends 2011-2015

Construction permits for new, single-family homes grew by 56 percent from 2011-2015. And the number of apartment or condos built in 2015 exceeded the number of single-family homes in 2015.

CCLD Spring Seminars: residential, commercial energy codes

Seminars offered by DLI's Construction Codes and Licensing Division are offered at locations throughout Minnesota through May 18, 2017. The seminars focus on complying with requirements of the Residential Energy Code and Commercial Energy Code. Continuing education units are available for building officials and residential contractors.

Teen workers:  resources for teens, parents, employers

Each year, thousands of working teens find value in employment far beyond financial necessity. Although employment of teens provides many benefits, the potential for serious injury and death must not be ignored or denied. Employers, teens and parents must increase their awareness of the laws governing child labor and take a proactive approach to ensure all teens are afforded the right to work safely.
