 Commissioners Tout Graduation Rates

Commissioner Sieben joined Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius and Higher Education Commissioner Larry Pogemiller last week in announcing that high school graduation rates reached nearly 80 percent in Minnesota last year, their highest level in a decade and among the highest in the country.
Minnesotans Support Wage Hike

A Star Tribune poll found that nearly 80 percent of Minnesotans support raising the state's minimum wage, although not necessarily to the $9.50 hourly level that has been proposed. According to DEED figures cited in the story, 460,000 Minnesotans make less than $9.50 an hour.
Minnesota is among the least expensive health insurance markets in the country, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Employment Law Guidebook
The 12th edition of “An Employer’s Guide to Employment Law Issues in Minnesota” is now available. The free DEED publication provides a broad overview of federal and state laws that pertain to the employee-employer relationship and offers guidance for hiring and managing employees, developing employment policies and avoiding liability for employment law violations.
Help Wanted in Manufacturing
Manufacturers throughout the state are struggling to fill openings, according to the latest round of DEED’s Minnesota Hiring Difficulties Survey. Based on a survey of manufacturers last spring, two-thirds of the industry’s job openings in Minnesota were classified as hard to fill.
 Kevin and Angela Ridgley of Duluth went through a difficult period a few years ago, both losing their jobs at the same time they were struggling with health issues. Then they connected with DEED vocational rehabilitation counselor Jeri Werner, who helped them get back in the workforce. The Ridgleys are thankful that DEED's Vocational Rehabilitation Services was there when they needed it. |
