Twin Ports Aviation Business Flying High

Duluth was hit hard by the economic downturn, but today the Twin Ports is experiencing an aviation sector job growth boom. More than 200 airplane mechanics, working for AAR Aircraft Services, are working at the former Northwest Airlines maintenance facility -- and they're expanding. And Cirrus Design is hiring another 100 people in preparation for its new jet project.

Braham, Grasston Receive Grant Funds to Assist Homeowners, Commercial Building Owners

Two Isanti County cities, with assistance from Lakes & Pines Community Action Council, Inc., were awarded $613,410 from DEED's Small Cities Development Program. Fourteen owner-occupied homes and seven commercial buildings will be rehabilitated.

Minnesota Companies Export $5.2 Billion
Minnesota companies exported $5.2 billion worth of agricultural, mining and manufactured products in the second quarter of 2013, according to DEED figures. Machinery lead all sectors, with sales at $1.1 billion in the quarter. “To continue strengthening our economy, we need to identify market demand for Minnesota’s high quality products and increase exports,” said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben.

Business Expansions Generate 1,500 Jobs
Second quarter numbers are in: Minnesota businesses announced plans to create nearly 1,500 jobs related to 38 expansion projects, Combined with first quarter results, the state has seen a total of 80 business expansions in 2013.
