BEAD Challenge, resources + updates

Minnesota’s BEAD Challenge process moved into the Rebuttal phase on August 22nd. Rebuttals can be submitted for 30 days through the BEAD Challenge Portal following notification of a valid Challenge or for those Challenges posted to the Open Rebuttals list, but the deadline specified. OBD recommends eligible rebutters submit their rebuttals as soon as possible, and not wait until the due date, so that if rejected you have time to correct your rebuttal.

  • Visit the OBD BEAD webpage for more information on using the portal and the rebuttal process.
  • Register for the next BEAD Challenge weekly office hours, Thursday August 29th at 2pm here. Office hours will include updates on the Challenge process and Q+A.
  • Recordings from 8/1 and 8/22 office hour sessions are posted on the webpage with AppGeo’s demos of the rebuttal process in the Challenge Portal, the most recent of which can be viewed here

Digital Opportunity Update

Beginning October 10, all internet service providers – regardless of their size, technology, or geography – are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make “broadband labels” publicly available. These labels summarize service essentials like monthly costs, data caps, and speed metrics. Easy access to this information is an important step in ensuring digital opportunities are available to all.

The National Digital Inclusion Alliance provided a 30-minute webinar on August 22 outlining how to use this new consumer resource in digital opportunity work. A recording is available, and more details including a glossary of terms is available through the FCC.

Governor’s Task Force on Broadband, August meeting recap

The Governor’s Task Force met at the Northeast Service Coop (NESC) in Moutain Iron, MN the morning of August 19th. Task Force member, and the meeting’s host, Paul McDonald, Board Chair, St. Louis County Commissioner, welcomed the Task Force with an introduction to broadband in St. Louis County. The Task Force and community members in attendance also heard from a panel of internet service providers from the region on an overview of their work and experiences. Updates from the Office of Broadband Development were provided on BEAD and Digital Opportunity, as well as a general office update.

Thank you to both Paul McDonald and NESC for hosting; to panelists Joe Buttweiler, Chief Strategy Officer, Consolidated Telecommunications Company, Paul Brinkman, Executive Director, Northeast Service Coop, and Gary Johnson, CEO/GM, Paul Bunyan Communications for sharing their expertise and time; and thank you to the many community members and partners who attended for their participation and engagement.

Materials from this and previous Task Force meetings are available on the Broadband Task Force webpage.
