Former Google executive Steve Grove, from Northfield via Silicon Valley, earlier this year was put in charge of DEED. One reason to recruit somebody like Grove is that he might bring a good idea or two from Google with him. And at the end of last week, DEED was rolling out a new strategic plan that has at least one very good idea from Google baked into it.
Twin Cities Business - 8/8/19
Neela Mollgaard has been named executive director of Launch Minnesota, the state’s latest initiative aimed at fostering entrepreneurialism. She’ll take the reins August 26. The program was developed, in part, during the 2019 legislative session through a collaboration between DEED and a bipartisan group of lawmakers.

A shortage of child care spots is not a problem unique to Sleepy Eye. In fact, it is an issue throughout Minnesota. DEED was appropriated $750,000 for their grant program, to increase the supply of quality child care providers, to support economic development. At least 60% of the fund had to go to projects in greater Minnesota.

Chatfield Economic Development Director Chris Giesen reported that the city of Chatfield and its and economic development authority (EDA) closed on the purchase of the Twiford redevelopment property on Monday, July 29. “We received about $233,000 to move and improve public utilities. Without the grant, this project would have been very difficult to achieve,” Chatfield Economic Development Director Chris Giesen said.

Commissioner Grove is excited to announce that Neela Mollgaard will serve as Executive Director of Launch Minnesota, starting August 26.
The Minnesota Public Facilities Authority (PFA) announced today $12 million in loan and grant funding for water infrastructure projects in Atkin, Dassel, Gibbon, Marshall.
Deputy Commissioner Kevin McKinnon writes,"Today we’re looking for an experienced, innovative economic development professional to lead our business development team, headquartered in Saint Paul. "
