A push to bolster Minnesota’s tech economy takes shape

When Steve Grove was appointed commissioner of DEED in January, one of his first priorities was to grow the state’s technology sector to compete with cities like Seattle, Boston and Austin.  That agenda is now taking shape with help from the Legislature. In the two-year budget approved in May, lawmakers passed a slate of proposals made by Grove and Gov. Tim Walz to foster startup businesses and build tech companies.

A collaborative group including Anoka County, Washington County, Connexus Energy and other regional partners has launched the Minnesota Technology Corridor, an initiative to attract companies to the north metro. Stakeholders include the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Greater MSP, site selectors and commercial real estate brokers.

Minnesota Business Firms Expect Stable Conditions in 2020

Minnesota business service firms feel positive about the economy, with 86 percent expecting sales revenue to increase or remain stable next year, according to a joint survey released by DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Five Greater Minnesota Cities Awarded Infrastructure Grants

Grants totaling $5.3 million were approved by DEED for infrastructure projects in four Greater Minnesota communities.

CNBC ranked Minnesota the 7th best state for business this year. This is the 11th time Minnesota has been ranked in the top ten in the 13 years CNBC has been making these rankings. According to the rankings Minnesota improved its rankings in Workforce and Education categories.
