Unemployment holds at 3.3 percent

Minnesota gained 100 jobs in May according to figures released today by DEED. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 3.3 percent in May and the U.S. unemployment rate was 3.6 percent. April’s job gain was revised downward from 3,600 jobs to 200, and annual gains fell to 4,164 jobs or 0.1 percent.

Minnesota added 100 jobs last month, the state jobs agency said, or maybe it was just 51. Because the agency rounds data to the nearest hundred, it could have been either number or any up to 150. New data released Thursday showed the state unemployment rate held at 3.3% for a second month after rising in April from the March level of 3.2%. But it also revealed that the state’s job market has stalled out.

At Candyland in Stillwater, Brandon Lamb says teens this summer are a big chunk of his staff. "Yeah that's who we really pool from," said Lamb. That seems to be a common theme for many employers this summer. "They're involved in sports, they're involved in extracurricular," said Oriane Casale, an analyst at DEED. She says a bigger contributor may be an ongoing recovery from The Great Recession.

Minnesota is fourth in the nation for child well-being according to an annual report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Among the report's findings, Minnesota had just 4 percent of teens not in school or working and the state also ranked high for economic well-being and overall access to education.
