Northfield native Steve Grove now leads the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, a role that continues a successful career that has included stints at YouTube and The Boston Globe. Grove was appointed by newly elected Gov. Tim Walz in January.
The 10-year process of developing the vacant lot between the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Old Town culminated Monday night with the Mankato City Council authorizing $1.5 million in subsidies and loans for the $16 million Bridge Plaza building — the latest in a series of major investments in Mankato's downtown. The council also approved a pair of $200,000 City Center Renaissance loans — one at 5% interest over 10 years and the other at 3% over 15 years. In addition, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development provided a $170,000 grant for soil corrections at the site.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other state lawmakers have reinstated a program that gives tax breaks to investors backing Minnesota startups. The angel tax credit provides incentives to investors backing small businesses in Minnesota. It was (in general) popular among local startups, and when you look at the numbers it’s easy to see why. Between 2010 and 2017, more than $420 million was invested in 855 Minnesota businesses through the state’s angel tax credit program, according to the Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Summer jobs for teens are still thought of as a rite of passage, a critical milestone on the way to adulthood. Most older adults who were teenagers in the 1960s and 1970s can readily recall their adventures with their summer jobs. Yet the number of teens with a summer job has been falling. DEED's Assistant Director of Labor Marking Information Office, Oriane Casale, spoke with Chris Farrell on the topic.

DEED announced that Carol Pankow will serve as Assistant Commissioner for Workforce Services. Within DEED, the workforce services division helps individuals overcome barriers to employment and develop job skills by providing a range of programs and services for laid-off and unemployed individuals. In this role, Pankow will lead DEED’s workforce services for Unemployment Insurance, Disability Determination Services, Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS), and the State Services for the Blind (SSB).
