On Thursday, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter joined a broad cross-section of life science-based entrepreneurs to cut the ribbon for a sizable new building addition at University Enterprise Laboratory, one of the state’s most unique business incubators. Speakers at the event included Steve Kelley, the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and Hamse Warfa, the new head of economic opportunity for DEED.

Two St. Cloud companies will benefit from the latest round of workforce development grants awarded by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. DEED is giving Nahan Printing, Inc. $300,000 and American Axle & Manufacturing more than $208,000.

Minnesota had 226 business expansion projects in 2018 – up from 187 the previous year, according to tracking by DEED, based on publically announced expansions. While complete data is not available for all of the projects, these expansions represent at least 8,829 new jobs and 1,672 retained jobs. They also reflect new investment of at least $2.4 billion and over 7.5 million square feet.
Business expansion projects in four Greater Minnesota communities and two metro locations will create more than 200 new jobs over the next three years. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is supporting these projects with grants totaling $1.5 million from the Job Creation Fund. Awards were made to Alexandria Industries in Alexandria, MinMor Industries in Mora, Reprocessed Plastics in Garfield, Sage Electrochromics in Faribault, Carlson Wagonlit Travel in Minnetonka, and McLaughlin Gormley King Co. in Brooklyn Park.
