Katelyn France was the first of five startup entrepreneurs to explain their concepts and their needs in "Shark Tank" style at the Natural Resources Research Institute. Their panel, seated together on a couch, consisted of Gov. Tim Walz; Steve Grove, commissioner of DEED; and Melissa Hortman, speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

When it comes to growing the economy, the old adage is true: You get what you pay for. For years, Minnesota has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in supporting targeted industries in the state — in 2019 alone we’re set to spend over $600 million in grants, tax credits, and other programs to support agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and forestry. These investments are important to grow and build businesses in these industries.

Defense tech giant spending $2M to expand Plymouth operations, hiring 60 workers
StarTribune - 4/18/19

With increased orders from the U.S. military, Northrop Grumman will spend $2 million this year expanding its Plymouth operations, the company said. The expansion calls for hiring 60 new workers and converting 7,000 square feet of existing offices into laboratories and testing space for the division that makes and tests precision-guided artillery kits for Virginia-based Northrop Grumman. There is currently about 36,000 square feet of lab space.

DEED Names American Indian Liaison

DEED announced that Kirk Crowshoe has been named the agency’s American Indian Liaison. Working within DEED’s Office of Economic Opportunity, Crowshoe will serve as the liaison between DEED and Minnesota’s 11 Federally Recognized American Indian Tribes and Greater American Indian community, and develop a meaningful engagement strategy that facilitates relationship-building and mutual trust amongst DEED and the American Indian community.

Minnesota adds 1,300 Jobs in March

Minnesota gained 1,300 seasonally adjusted jobs in March while the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 3.2 percent according to figures released today by DEED. The U.S. unemployment rate was 3.8 percent. Minnesota total over-the-year growth rebounded back into positive territory in March as employment was up 7,605 or 0.3 percent over last March. 

Northrop Grumman Expands Plymouth Operations

DEED announced that Northrop Grumman plans to improve their existing 191,000 square foot facility in Plymouth, Minnesota, and is expected to create more than 60 new high quality jobs during the next three years. DEED is supporting the project with a $600,000 loan from the Minnesota Investment Fund, and $700,000 from the Job Creation Fund.

DEED created a new video series called the Minnesota Monthly Jobs Report to coincide with the release of the unemployment numbers. LMI Director Steve Hine gives his more detailed analysis of the jobs numbers and what they could mean for the state.
