Manufacturing up

Manufacturers to expand in Carver, St. Paul

A state grant program is supporting two manufacturing companies planning to expand in the Twin Cities. The money comes from the Innovative Business Development Public Infrastructure program run by DEED. The grants, which require a 50 percent match from the local city government, support manufacturing, warehousing, agricultural processing, research and technology, as well as business incubators and companies “researching, developing, or producing a new proprietary technology.

About 13 months ago the news everybody was excited about, in Fish Lake Township, was the DEED broadband grant awarded for extending internet high capacity and high speed fiber services throughout the township.  The project has now been completed, and residents are invited to a “ribbon cutting” next week to celebrate the grassroots effort instrumental in making this happen.  The official project completion is being commemorated at Fish Lake Township Hall, Monday February 18, at 9 a.m.

Steve Grove, the new commissioner of DEED, traveled a somewhat unusual path to his job in Gov. Tim Walz’s administration. Born in Northfield, Grove spent a few years as a reporter before joining YouTube and creating a division that worked to bring news and political content to the video site. He later directed the Google News Lab, which runs projects aimed at boosting local journalism around the country, and co-founded a nonprofit with his wife Mary, Silicon North Stars, which flies high-schoolers to Silicon Valley for tech camps.

PFA Approves over $26 Million for Water Infrastructure Projects

The Minnesota Public Facilities Authority (PFA) approved $26 million in loan and grant funding for water infrastructure projects in Minnesota. Funding was approved for Evansville, Verndale, Windom and Dennison.

The Minnesota State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) grant program is looking to award funds to Minnesota businesses planning to grow their exports.  The STEP program provides financial and technical assistance to qualifying Minnesota small businesses with an active interest in exporting products or services to foreign markets. Minnesota had two of the nation's top 100 richest cities

Bloomberg put two Minnesota cities on their top 100 richest cities in America report. This is the first year that Medina, Minnesota made the top-100 list. To make the list Bloomberg evaluated inflation-adjusted household data for all U.S. places, as defined by the Census, with a minimum of 2,000 households and ranked them based on average household income. Nearly 6,250 met the criteria.
