DEED has awarded $161,779 to Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group to train 50 employees. The grant is through DEED’s Minnesota Job Skills Partnership, and was part of $1.6 million awarded to train 2,425 workers around the state in different skills. The UnitedHealth Group grant will go toward training 50 Optum employees at Metropolitan University. Optum is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group and is the largest employer of cybersecurity professionals in the Twin Cities region.

DEED has awarded more than $1.51 million in grants to six Minnesota businesses. The selected beneficiaries are: Pinnacle Climate Technologies Inc., Windings Inc., Alula, Hydra-Flex Inc., New Plastics Plus Inc., and Bix Produce Company. The capital for the grants is sourced from the Minnesota Job Creation Fund, which was formed in 2013 by Governor Mark Dayton to support private businesses’ expansion projects that in turn generate jobs and support the state’s economy.

Under the partnership, educational institutions and businesses work together to secure MJSP funding. Businesses initially meet with an accredited educational institution to explain their training needs and to learn options.

Governor Dayton proclaimed this last Saturday Small Business Saturday in the State of Minnesota. “Small businesses in the United States employ over half of the employees in the private sector, and more than 500,000 Minnesota small businesses employ one million Minnesotans,” reads Governor Dayton’s proclamation.

A November groundbreaking for Graco – that will expand operations in Rogers, Minn. and add to their workforce – is the largest construction project in the city’s history. Look for a state-of the art training center for distributors and international customers by the end of 2019. Graco manufactures fluid handling equipment for industrial and commercial applications. The company plans to create 84 jobs over four years and invest $73 million to expand its operations at the David A. Koch Center. The Center, named after the company's former president, CEO and chairman, is the worldwide headquarters for its Contractor Equipment Division.
