Last year, food manufacturing was nearly four times more concentrated in southwest Minnesota than the state as a whole, according to DEED. It was one of the few industries that added regional jobs during the recession, increasing employees by 4.7 percent, and continuing that growth over the recovery years. Fairmont Foods Inc. is a bona fide example of that proliferation. In January 2015, then-owners of Fairmont Foods announced the plant was closing, putting about 150 full-time and part-time employees out of work.

Bedrock Industry of Northeastern Minnesota

Health care and social assistance is the dominant industry in northeastern Minnesota, accounting for nearly 24 percent of all jobs. By comparison, 17 percent of all workers in the state are employed in health care and social assistance, according to a story by Erik White in Trends magazine.  

Rock-Solid Projects Land on Finance & Commerce Top Project List for 2017

Seven DEED redevelopment projects – two in St. Paul and five in Minneapolis – were among 33 honorees for Finance & Commerce’s annual Top Projects. The projects had to be fully completed by the end of 2017 to be eligible, and were judged by the degree of difficulty, creativity in design, innovative construction techniques, cooperation among contractors and management, and sustainability efforts.
