DEED Small Cities Grants Helping Minnesota Communities

Thanks to taxpayers, the 800 or so residents of Clarkfield can look forward to the day when they won’t have to tap their faucets in the winter to keep the city water tower from freezing up.

Clarkfield scored near the top this year in the annual distribution of Small Cities Development Program grants from DEED to help rehabilitate housing for low- to moderate-income people, mitigate blight and slums, and eradicate health and safety problems.

Daikin Lands $2.35 Million in DEED Funding for New Factory

Daikin Applied Americas’ $40 million factory expansion in Faribault will receive $2.35 million in loans and grants from DEED.

Daikin, which makes heating, venting and air conditioning systems for office towers, schools and factories, has lobbied the state for aid since the spring. That’s when Daikin first announced it was buying a building in Faribault to create the company’s third manufacturing factory in Minnesota.

Lakefield Moves Ahead With Wastewater Treatment Project

Lakefield’s two-phase water infrastructure project in the pipeline for the past five to 10 years – received a critical boost last month when the project was awarded nearly $17 million in local, state and federal funding. “It had to be done, but there was no way we could do it,” said Lakefield Administrative Clerk Kelly Rasche. “(The city) does not have $17 million laying around to do that project.”

Minnesota Exports at Record $5.9 Billion in Second Quarter

Sales of Minnesota agricultural, mining and manufactured exports grew 15 percent to a second quarter record of $5.9 billion, according to figures released by DEED last week. Minnesota had the 11th-largest gain in exports nationally during this period. U.S. exports as a whole were up 11 percent, with 43 states reporting increased export sales.

Northside Community Job and Resource Fair

DEED will be among the participants during the Northside Community Job and Resource Fair in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The event, scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m., will be held at 800 West Broadway. Nearly 60 employers, community organizations and staff agencies will participate.

Minnesota ranks second in the country for the quality of its community colleges, according to an analysis by WalletHub. The personal finance website compared 715 U.S. colleges by cost and financing, education and career outcomes. Seven of the state's community colleges ranked in the study's top 20. South Dakota was rated No. 1 overall.
