The Mayo Clinic has been regarded as a hub for cutting-edge medical research for most of its existence. But for years the health care giant barred its doctors and researchers from participating in most types of entrepreneurship.

That changed in 2013. The Mayo Clinic lifted the restriction and created employee entrepreneurship programs that gave Mayo Clinic doctors and researchers additional freedom with the products they created.

Brenda Nolby

Jam Hops in Ham Lake has evolved from a small gymnastics program into a bustling children's activities center. Owner Brenda Nolby has watched the business grow from serving 400 kids in 2000 to a clientele of more than 2,000 a week and a staff of over 90. Not bad for an enterprise that barely survived the Great Recession. Nolby was recently named Minnesota Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Four Small Businesses Awarded Job Creation Fund Grants From DEED

Grants totaling more than $560,000 were approved by DEED for business expansion projects in four Minnesota cities. Funding went to the following businesses: Stoneridge Software, Inc., Barnesville, $140,000; Modern Automotive Performance, Cottage Grove, $135,013; Vickerman Co., Norwood Young America, $110,000; and Cantilever Bridge Distillery LLC, Ranier, $175,000.

The Minnesota Small Business Development Center (SBDC) network offers customized technical assistance and support to businesses at any point in their life cycle, from startup to growth to exit strategies. The state network served 3,445 entrepreneurs and businesses in 2017. Consultants provided 35,326 hours of services, and more than 5,800 jobs were created or saved. Clint Kruger began his electrical contracting business in the basement of his home in 2008. Today, Preferred Electric has 38 employees including veterans. Kruger's company was recently named Minnesota 2018 Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
