Two of DEED's most popular economic development tools are facing substantial cuts in bills moving through the Minnesota Legislature. A Senate measure would cut funding for the  Minnesota Investment Fund from $12.5 million to $10.5 million. A House bill goes further, cutting $7 million from the Job Creation Fund and $5 million from the Minnesota Investment Fund. Commissioner Hardy says she's concerned that cutting the funds will leave the state flatfooted in case of a downturn. "I do believe taxpayers are getting a good return on their investment,” she said.

The research and development facility will partner with local talent on the next generation of technical innovations for the largest branch of the U.S. military. Local officials see it as a pipeline to high-paying jobs from a steady funding source. No matter where it is located, “this is something that benefits everyone in the region,” said DEED Deputy Commissioner Kevin McKinnon.

Fewer Teens Applying for Summer Jobs in Minnesota This Year
CCX Media Brooklyn Park-5/7/18

Local businesses are having harder time than in the past finding teenagers to fill summer jobs. The unemployment rate for teens dropped to 7.7 percent in March, and the population of young people ages 16 to 19 looking for work in Minnesota has fallen by 6,000. DEED's Oriane Casale says Minnesota probably has more open jobs than teenagers to fill them.
