 Maple Plain-based custom manufacturer Proto Labs Inc. will receive $850,000 in state aid for its 202,000-square-foot expansion in Brooklyn Park, a project that is expected to create nearly 140 jobs on top of the 225 jobs it is moving from Plymouth. The Job Creation Fund grant from DEED is on top of the $29.9 million Proto Labs says it will invest in the project.

 Jeff Woodside, manager at Albert Lea’s Select Foods, is the rare manufacturing executive who can say his plant is fully staffed these days. The roots of his good fortune lay in Select’s newfound relationship with a Minnesota-based community of Karen refugees who now comprise about half of his company’s 470 employees.
Charles Newton, the company's human resources director, says these new workers exhibited a much-admired work habit from the start: “They came to work every day,” he says. “I mean every single day.”

Gov. Dayton last Friday recommended to the U.S. Department of Treasury 128 low-income census tracts in Minnesota to be designated as Opportunity Zones. Opportunity Zones are a new economic and community development program established by Congress to encourage long-term economic development and housing investments in low-income communities nationwide.
Minnesota employers added 2,900 jobs in March while the unemployment rate held steady at 3.2 percent, according to seasonally adjusted figures released by DEED last week. Over the past year, the state has gained 21,250 jobs, an increase of 0.7 percent. U.S. jobs were up 1.6 percent during that period.
Grants totaling $3.25 million were approved by DEED for infrastructure projects in four Greater Minnesota communities. DEED awarded the funding from its Greater Minnesota Business Development Public Infrastructure Grant Program for projects in North Mankato, Otsego, Ely and Thief River Falls.
