DEED in the News
Unemployment rates on Minnesota’s Iron Range reached 4 percent last month, their lowest point since the turn of the century as the region’s numbers reflect its rebounding mining industry. DEED regional analyst Erik White said laid off miners are going back to work, while others are finding employment in new fields, thanks to support from the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program.

Lt. Gov. Tina Smith said DEED's Border-to-Border Broadband Grant Program is helping to erase a significant divide between areas of Greater
Minnesota and more densely populated communities with robust high-speed
internet access. Smith and Commissioner Hardy last week announced $26 million in grant funding for broadband projects.

A $200,000 grant from DEED will help Royalton jump-start its 15-year-old industrial park. Mayor Andrea Lauer says city officials are excited about the grant and what it may do for the community. "Economic development in rural Minnesota is kind of an uphill battle. Any time we can get something that can make us a little bit more competitive, we really appreciate that."

provide 9,973 households, 2,169 businesses and 60 community institutions
across Minnesota with access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet.
