Digi-Key Considers Big Expansion

Digi-Key Electronics is considering adding a $200 million factory and distribution center to its Thief River Falls headquarters that could add 1,000 jobs over 10 years. Digi-Key will give the city and state a chance to put together an incentive package, including potential funding from DEED programs.

Brainerd SBDC Planning Open House

The North Central Minnesota Small Business Development Center in Brainerd will host an open house during SBDC Day on March 22. The office is among nine regional centers and 19 satellite centers operated by DEED around the state.

From left to right, DEED loan officers Bart Bevins and Abdullahi Mohamed and business representative Drew Lindorfer recently celebrated the first loan awarded under the agency's new Emerging Entrepreneur Loan Program. A $50,000 loan was approved for an Ethiopian immigrant who is opening Lucy's Market & Carry-Out in Minneapolis. The program supports the growth of businesses owned and operated by people of color, low-income people, women, veterans and/or people with disabilities.

Unemployment Rate Steady in January
Minnesota’s unemployment rate was 4 percent in January, unchanged from the state’s revised jobless rate in December, according to seasonally adjusted figures released by DEED last week. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in January. Leisure and hospitality led all sectors in January, gaining 3,300 jobs in the state.

State Exports at $5 Billion in 4th Quarter
Minnesota exports of manufactured, agricultural and mining products were valued at $5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016, unchanged from the same period a year earlier, according to figures released last week by DEED. U.S. exports were up 2 percent from one year ago. State exports to Asia climbed 8 percent in the quarter to $1.7 billion.
