Foundation Awarded DEED Loan Funds

The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation was awarded funding to help minorities, women, veterans and others finance their businesses. The foundation, which serves a 20-county region in southern Minnesota and is headquartered in Owatonna, will receive $50,000 under DEED's new Minnesota Emerging Entrepreneur Loan Program.

Minnesota has the highest rate of internet usage in the country, according to Entrepreneur. The magazine said 83.1 percent of Minnesotans, or 4.3 million households, use the internet. Vermont was second with 82.5 percent of the state's residents using the internet.

DEED Partners With TPT Program
A first-ever partnership between DEED and ECHO, a Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) program designed to address the information needs of Minnesota's non-English speaking populations, will make services in the Unemployment Insurance Program more accessible. DEED and ECHO created videos in Somali, Hmong and Spanish that explain how to apply for unemployment insurance benefits.

Group Releases Broadband Report
The Governor’s Task Force on Broadband released its annual report last week, which includes recommendations for Gov. Dayton, the Legislature and other policymakers to consider during the 2017 legislative session. The recommendations include $100 million in ongoing funding for the Border-to-Border Broadband Grant Development Program and $10 million in operating funds for the Office of Broadband Development, located within DEED.
