Home-health workers have begun contract negotiations that are likely to center on Minnesota’s chronic and worsening shortage of people willing to care for the state’s most vulnerable and frail residents. "The pool of people willing to do this kind of work has shrunk dramatically," said DEED's Oriane Casale.

While Minnesota lagged the country in median household income growth last year, the state fared better in two other metrics. Minnesota bettered the country in declining poverty rates and the percentage of people with health insurance.

Two Minnesota cities were recently named to Money magazine's list of the 50 best places to live in the country. Eden Prairie ranked No. 2 and Woodbury was No. 11. The magazine looked at such factors as taxes, education and health care.

State Sponsoring Two Career Fairs
Two upcoming career fairs are aiming to help connect more Minnesotans to state employment opportunities. First, on Oct. 18, the state of Minnesota will partner with the People of Color Career Fair to help people of color in Minnesota access opportunities for state employment. Then, on Oct. 29, the state will host its first-ever State Government Career Fair to connect all Minnesotans with opportunities in state government.

Rahr Corp. Debuts New Facilities
Rahr Corp. of Shakopee recently debuted its malt house and other new spaces to 650 neighbors and the local brewing community. Rahr began the $68 million expansion project in April 2015 and completed it six months ahead of schedule. DEED supported the project by awarding Rahr $610,000 from the Job Creation Fund last year. The completed project makes the Shakopee location the largest single-site malting facility in the world.
