Glimmers of Economic Hope for Minnesotans of Color

The latest income stats aren't as gloomy as last year's for black Minnesotans. Efforts to promote economic gains for Minnesotans of color scored one of the largest new funding gains at the 2016 Legislaure, winning $35 million through June 30, 2017, and another $35 million through mid-2019. Those funds are being distributed via a combination of direct grants to nonprofits with proven track records, and competitive grants.

Mankato Economy Fastest Growing in State Last Year

The Mankato-North Mankato MSA had the fastest growing economy in the state from 2014-15 and was the third fastest in the Upper Midwest. The GDP of Blue Earth and Nicollet counties grew at 3.2 percent during the time period.

This Friday is the deadline for organizations to submit proposals for one or more of seven competitive grant programs. These DEED programs are designed to increase economic opportunities for people of color, women, youth, people with disabilities and/or veterans. Requests for proposal (RFPs) are posted on DEED's website. Deadline times for each RFP may vary. Please note that emailed or faxed applications will not be accepted.

August Employment
It's the August summer cut, as employers trimmed 1,500 from their payrolls – seasonally adjusted figures – and the overall unemployment rate climbed 0.1 percent from July to 4 percent. The black employment picture continues to improve. Health care and social services are big gainers. Read more
