Minnesota Job and Wage Disparities

Isaac Ogata (above) didn't have a lot of luck finding work in his field after graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in civil engineering in 2012. According to a new DEED study, Ogata’s experience is not uncommon. Examining wage and jobs data, the agency found that thousands of Minnesotans of color are struggling to land full-time jobs related to their majors, and often earn less than their white counterparts.

With the population aging, a growing number of Minnesotans will experience blindness or severe disability seeing by 2020. DEED's State Services for the Blind's Senior Services unit can help, offering assistance with daily living, travel and other activities. Last year, the unit served more than 4,000 seniors.

Microbiologics Expanding in St. Cloud
Microbiologics Inc., a worldwide supplier of microorganisms and lab-testing products, will build a 30,000-square-foot addition and create 35 jobs in an expansion and renovation of its headquarters in St. Cloud. The company said it will invest $7.24 million on the project, which will include new research and development laboratories and production facilities. DEED is supporting the project with a $182,000 grant from the Job Creation Fund.

Serving Our Clients

DEED is seeking applications from nonprofit organizations to serve as lenders for the Emerging Entrepreneur Program. Loans will be available for Minnesota businesses owned by people of color, low-income people, women, veterans and people with disabilities. Workshops on how to apply to be a certified program lender will be held next week in Brainerd (Monday), Mankato (Tuesday) and St. Paul at DEED headquarters (Friday). Go here for more details.
