August 2016 Partner Express Newsletter

Partner Express

August 2016

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

Hello everyone – we all hope this edition of the Partner Express finds you all well and taking advantage of this incredible summer weather. We hope that those of you who experienced the turbulent storms were able to get back to normal with minimal interruption. We also hope that those of you working with students are finding them excited to start training in the fall!

The work that is keeping us busy now that our new fiscal year is nearly completely up and running involves negotiating performance measures with the U.S. Department of Labor. We are also preparing to orient members of Minnesota’s Job Skills Partnership board about many things related to workforce development, especially the Dislocated Worker program.

Should you have an idea for information that would be helpful in this newsletter, please send it our way! We want this document to be of good use to all of you. Thank you, always, for all of the good work you do on behalf of individuals in our great state.

-Annie

GRANTS UPDATE

PY16FY17 New Mass Layoff and Grant Modification forms:

DEED has updated the Mass Layoff Grant Application and Modification forms for the new fiscal year. These new forms are WIOA compliant and make a few other changes to update our mass layoff applications. Remember that all new grants and modifications must be submitted to the Grants Review Team, led by Monica Weber and Francisca Abbey the last Friday of the month to be considered at the next review meeting.

The new applications are listed on the DEED website here: http://mn.gov/deed/programs-services/dislocated-worker/counselors/forms/

We encourage all providers to please use these new forms for all mass layoff projects and modifications in the new year. If you find technical problems with either document please let Monica Weber know monica.weber@state.mn.us

New Mass Layoff Projects:

Merrill Cooperation’s employee committee selected Career Management Services (CMS) to be their Dislocated Worker program service provider.

Sector Partnership NEG Reminder:

Please remember that there are funds available via the SP NEG to serve dislocated workers; specifically those who would benefit from work-based training such as OJTs, apprenticeships, incumbent worker training, and transitional jobs.

For NDWG (NEG) questions, please contact Francisca Abbey via email at Francisca.Abbey@state.mn.us or at 651-259-7508.

SUCCESS STORY

Lori Sandish and Minnesota Job Partners

Lori worked at Target for 18 years, holding eight unique roles during her tenure there. She was separated from employment in March of 2015. Her role at the time of separation was National Operations Leader for Food Distribution Centers.

She started her new position with SuperValu on December 28, 2015 as the Director of Retail Pricing for Independent Business.

Lori shares her experience working with Minnesota Job Partners' Dislocated Worker Program:

"MN Job Partners was a wonderful addition/complement to the other job search resources that I had access to (Right Management Outplacement service, Easter Lutheran Job Transition group, Target Facebook Support group, personal network).

My counselor was a critical element in the wonderful experience that I had with MN Job Partners. Her personal connection, support, and encouragement was so helpful...I felt motivated and encouraged after each of our meetings or phone calls! It was a much more personal and effective 'coaching' relationship than I had experienced with the outplacement service.

My counselor was a supportive resource that reviewed my approach to my career search, offered suggestions for additional steps I could take, and was a supportive partner and champion during my search and offer negotiation.

I took advantage of the following benefits via the MN Job Partners Program:

  • Membership with two professional organizations (TeamWomen MN and Network of Executive Women)
  • Attended several webinars offered via Arbez
  • Completed technical education (MS Project) via the Science Museum of MN
  • Attended two conferences sponsored by Job Partners - both were educational and offered great networking opportunities
  • Parking expense reimbursement while I attended 2 St. Thomas leadership development courses (courses paid for by Target)"
