MNvest Opens Small Businesses to State's Small Investors

You can buy more than a pint or a growler from that craft brewery your buddies are planning. You could own a piece of that business or another start-up now that rules have taken effect for MNvest, which is Minnesota’s equity crowdfunding program for small businesses. MNvest offers small businesses in the state the opportunity to raise money from Minnesotans with just a few thousand dollars to invest.

Nonprofit Focuses on Helping Minority-Owned Small Businesses

The Metropolitan Economic Development Association, a financier and consulting nonprofit backed by business, has helped launch more than 500 minority-owned businesses and assisted several thousand more over the years. The group's board recently approved a plan to grow its small business loan fund from $8 million to $20 million.

Life Fitness Expanding in Owatonna with Job Creation Fund Assistance

Exercise equipment manufacturer Life Fitness will add 110 jobs as part of a $22.9 million expansion of its factory in Owatonna. 
The Rosemont, Ill., based company said it will expand the facility by 150,000 square feet to make room for increased production of Cybex exercise equipment. Specialists in welding, fabrication, powder coat painting and assembly will be hired. DEED is supporting the project with an $850,000 grant from the Job Creation Fund. 

Business Services Firms Express Optimism About Minnesota Economy

More than 80 percent of Minnesota business services firms expect sales and profits to climb or remain stable next year, according to a joint study by DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Business services firms expressed similar levels of optimism when asked about productivity, employment levels, exports, selling prices and other economic measures. Firms that offer business services specialize in such areas as accounting, engineering, public relations, computers and other support activities for companies.
