Who's Been Left Out of the Recovery?

Since the end of the Great Recession, Minnesota has emerged boasting an enviable economic record, with an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent and nearly 28,000 jobs added over the past year, according to DEED. But as James Daniel (pictured above) knows well, the good times aren’t being shared by all Minnesotans.

Genevieve Morales, migrant labor representative at the Faribault WorkForce Center, was honored as the parade marshal in Blooming Prairie over the Fourth of July weekend. Morales was recognized for helping to better the lives of migrant workers in the Blooming Prairie area. "I think there’s quite a few people that have no idea of the things she’s done,” said Tammy Johnson, who nominated Morales for the honor.

For the second year in a row, Minnesota topped the nation’s Kids Count Index for overall child well-being. The study looked at economic, health, education, and family and community indicators.

$35 Million for Broadband Funding
DEED will begin taking applications on July 22 for funding to expand broadband infrastructure in Minnesota. The $35 million in funding, which was approved during the 2016 legislative session, went into effect with the beginning of the 2017 fiscal year last Friday. DEED will award grants through its Border-to-Border Broadband Development Grant Program.

Business Services Firms Optimistic
More than 80 percent of Minnesota business services firms expect sales and profits to climb or remain stable next year, according to a joint study released last week by DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Business services firms expressed similar levels of optimism when asked about productivity, employment levels, exports, selling prices and other economic measures.

It's that time of year again. DEED's 10th annual Veterans Career Fair will be held Wednesday, July 13, at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. Military veterans who are looking for new jobs or careers will have an opportunity to meet with more than 150 employers.
