Getting People 'Off the Sidelines'

Commissioner Shawntera Hardy, appointed in April to lead the state’s principal economic development agency, is acquainting herself with the wide-ranging programs that fall under DEED's authority. Hardy, whose experience includes working as a city planner in St. Paul and lobbyist for HealthPartners, said her goal is to “help people get off the sidelines” to find jobs and start businesses.

Two DEED Programs Take Budget Hit

Two of Gov. Dayton's prized business incentive programs will see steep funding cuts under a budget bill he signed earlier this month. The governor wants lawmakers to reverse cutbacks to the Job Creation Fund and the Minnesota Investment Fund during a possible special session. But that demand isn't going over well.

DEED Awards Youth Program Grants
DEED awarded $250,000 to 13 groups statewide to help high school students explore and prepare for careers. The grants were awarded through the agency’s Office of Youth Development. The new round of grants will fund career-planning programs that serve youth underrepresented in the workforce primarily from racial, ethnic and at-risk communities.

DEED Approves Job-Training Grant
DEED awarded Anoka-Ramsey Community College a $360,000 grant under the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership to train employees at Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. In the two-year project, the college will partner with the company to deliver a customized training program to 400 workers. Classes will focus on technology, compliance and certification, and project management.

DEED's Redevelopment Grant and Demolition Loan programs will be the subject of an informational session on Thursday, June 30, at DEED headquarters. Participants will learn how the programs work, what types of projects are eligible for funding and which types of projects compete well for grants. The deadline for applying for the next round of funding is 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1. Other details about the two programs are available here.
