DEED Names Francois Assistant Commissioner Karen Francois will join DEED as assistant commissioner of the Office of Career and Business Opportunity. The new DEED office was created by Gov. Mark Dayton to help workers and businesses of color find career paths and business opportunities in Minnesota. Francois will begin her first day at DEED on May 4.

Pathways Projects Win DEED Funding DEED approved grants totaling $2.55 million for 27 projects that will create greater opportunity for nearly 900 Minnesotans to pursue careers with family-sustaining wages. The funding was awarded under DEED’s Pathways to Prosperity program, which focuses on helping low-wage and low-skill adults who have multiple barriers to employment.
DEED Awards Job-Training Grant DEED awarded Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical a $260,000 grant under the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership to train 194 long-term care employees. The college will collaborate with two long-term care providers, Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove and Harmony Community Healthcare in Harmony, to create a long-term care certification program.
For the first time ever, Minnesota veterans will have access to a free entrepreneurship training course called
Boots to Business Reboot. This two-step training program will teach veterans about what it takes
to own and operate a business. Classes will be held on two consecutive Fridays, May 13 and May 20, at Metro State University in St. Paul. Register here.
