Commissioner Sieben Stepping Down

DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben is leaving her post to pursue other opportunities and will be replaced by Shawntera Hardy, the deputy chief of staff for Gov. Dayton. Sieben, who worked in Dayton’s first campaign for governor, served as the commissioner for five years. At DEED, she steered a 1,500-employee agency, charged with wooing job-making companies and paying out more than $1 billion in unemployment benefits.

Stock Car Parts Maker Eyes Mankato

A business that manufactures components for dirt track stock cars is planning to move its operations to Mankato. Medieval Metalwerx and its subsidiary, Medieval Chassis, have been in business for 12 years in Mayer, located between Hutchinson and the Twin Cities.  The business is seeking a $192,000 low-interest loan from DEED's Minnesota Investment Fund.

Unemployment Rate Steady at 3.7 Percent
The Minnesota unemployment rate held steady at a seasonally adjusted 3.7 percent for the fifth consecutive month in March, according to figures released last Thursday by DEED. The state labor market shed 2,900 jobs in March, while gains in February were revised downward by 300 jobs. Over the past year, the state has gained 35,940 jobs, a growth rate of 1.3 percent.

State Services for the Blind and Minneapolis Community and Technical College are teaming up to sponsor the Careers Expo. The event on Saturday, April 30, will bring together about 30 adults who are blind, DeafBlind or visually impaired to talk about the world of work. They will answer questions about job requirements, what the job market is like and how they’ve dealt with challenges.
