Openings Grow as Economy Improves

State employers reported they had more than 96,000 positions to fill in the final quarter of last year — the most fourth quarter openings since the state began tracking in 2001. "These latest figures reflect a growing economy and increasing hiring demand in the state," Commissioner Sieben said.

Training Grant Helps Fridley Firm

EJ Ajax & Sons of Fridley is one of 10 manufacturing companies in Minnesota to benefit from a $446,090 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant awarded to Hennepin Technical College. The grant will be used to train new and existing manufacturing employees.

Job Growth in Clean Energy Sector

Minnesota will add 2,300 jobs in the clean energy industry this year, according to a report released last week by the Clean Energy Trust. Commissioner Sieben said the report underscores that Minnesota is a national leader in clean energy due to a culture of innovation, smart policies and strong partnerships.

The Minnesota Cup is back for its 12th year. The largest statewide startup competition in the country is now accepting applications for the 2016 contest. More than 1,300 emerging businesses were entered in last year's Minnesota Cup. Nearly $400,000 in prize money will be awarded this year, including $50,000 for taking home the grand prize. State Posts Strong Job Gains in February
Minnesota employers added 9,000 jobs in February, according to seasonally adjusted figures released last week by DEED. The state has gained 42,137 jobs in the past year, including nearly 6,000 new jobs in the fast-growing construction sector. The state's  seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 3.7 percent in February.

Extended UI Benefits OK'd for Iron Range
Iron Range workers who have been laid off due to mine closures will start receiving extended unemployment benefits through DEED's Unemployment Insurance Program.  Gov. Dayton signed legislation last week that will extend unemployment insurance benefits by 26 weeks for mining workers who have been laid off since March 1, 2015, and have exhausted earlier benefits. Impacted mining workers can visit the Minnesota Unemployment Insurance website at www.uimn.org to follow the applicant procedure.
