City of Minneapolis Employment and Training

City of Minneapolis Employment and Training administers a variety of employment and training programs under the direction of the Mayor, City Council, and Minneapolis Workforce Council. To learn more about specific programs click on the following links:

  • Minneapolis Works 
    Assistance finding a job for low-income, Minneapolis residents ages 18 and older.
  • Minneapolis Youth Works
    Assistance with high school completion, work preparation or employment goals for Minneapolis Youth ages 14-21.

    Comprehensive services for those who have lost their job through no fault of their own for adult ages 18 and older.

Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) Community Service Officer (CSO) Job Openings
CSOs work approximately 20-30 hours per week in the MPD for up to three years while enrolled as a student in an approved, two-year law enforcement program and/or working toward completion of MN Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) licensing. The CSO is a civilian position which has the possibility of promotion to a full time Police Officer position. CSOs are paid $16.27 per hour, plus tuition!

Training Opportunities

Free Training in Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
The Minneapolis Fire Department (MFD) is taking applications from men and women ages 18-30 for a certification course in EMS. Twenty-five candidates will be accepted into the program. Graduates will get preference points on the next MFD entrance exam in the spring of 2017. Graduates will be eligible to apply at HCMC for jobs in EMS, and if hired would have the option of further education for paramedic certifications. Trainees will earn $14.93 hourly to take this college-level course two days a week for 12 weeks.

Free D.R.I.V.E./IT Exploration – Introduction
The course will introduce people to the IT field and help them determine if any of the featured careers are of interest.  The course provides a basic introduction to application development, security, analytics, system administration and features connections with employers.

The three week course consists of three Saturdays: April 2, 9 & 16 from 8:30am-4:30pm. Classes will be taken at St. Paul College located on 235 Marshall Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55102.

Free Hand Soldering Training
CAPI USA is offering a free training in hand soldering. Participants will earn their IPC-A and IPC-J credentials for free. Training will start at the end of March.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age 18 years or older
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Minimum 5th grade English level

Free Creating IT Future’s Women-Only Class
Creating IT Futures’ IT-Ready career program will have a women-only classes this spring. IT-Ready includes an eight-week, full-time classroom training program that covers a technical computer curriculum geared toward the CompTIA A+ certification. In addition, participants learn professional skills to ensure their success for the interviewing process and on the job.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be an American citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Live in Minneapolis

Property Maintenance Training
This training consists of 12 weeks (8am-3pm, Mondays – Saturdays) with 10 weeks of paid internship.
