cranes these days. But Summit Academy, a community-based vocational and job
program in north Minneapolis, is noticing something besides cranes: the lack of
diversity in the industry. Efforts are under way to introduce more
minority workers to the construction industry.
WorkForce Center Hosts Job Fair FOX 21-1/14/16 Time to break out the resumes. The Duluth WorkForce Center will host the Northland Human Resource Association Day on Tuesday. The job fair will feature more than 20 employers. "There’s just a huge range of employers, a huge range of opportunities for jobs seekers, from service positions up to high level engineers," says DEED's Rhonda Rutford.
Manufacturers Predict Upbeat 2016 Twin Cities Business-1/12/16 Manufacturers in Minnesota are confident about conditions looking ahead, according to a recent survey, with nearly nine out of 10 businesses saying they will increase production or hold it steady in 2016. The Minnesota Manufacturing Business Condition Survey, conducted by DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, found that few employers in the sector were worried about global trends in Europe and Asia or domestic issues.
Minnesota startup companies had their seventh-best year on record for raising venture funding in 2015, attracting $371 million, according to a MoneyTree study. Read more details here.

Manufacturers Expect Stable Conditions Most Minnesota manufacturers expect business conditions to remain stable or improve in 2016, according to a joint survey released last week by DEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The Minnesota Manufacturing Business Conditions Survey found that 87 percent of the respondents expect production levels to stay the same or increase in 2016. When asked about employment levels, 86 percent of manufacturers said they expect hiring to remain the same or increase in the coming year.
`Guide to Starting a Business' Available The 2016 edition of “A Guide to Starting a Business in
Minnesota” is now available from the Small Business Assistance Office at DEED.
The popular guide, which is now in its 34th edition and free of
charge, provides a concise summary of the major issues faced by anyone starting
a business in Minnesota. “The 34th edition is a comprehensive and timely approach to
planning, forming and running a business," Commissioner Sieben said.
DEED Awards Job Training Funds A metro-area manufacturing consortium that wants to upgrade the technical skills of its workers will benefit from a $446,090 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership grant awarded to Hennepin Technical College. The grant will train 84 new and current employees at 10 manufacturing businesses over the next three years.
