Veterans Career Fair was a Big Success

DEED's ninth annual Veterans Career Fair at the Earle Brown Heritage Center last month drew 171 employers with job openings. “Most people don’t realize how much of an asset veterans are in the workforce,” said DEED's Jim Finley. “The skills that they adapted to can be translated into a job outside the military.”

Broadband Shifts from Perk to Need

When it comes to getting high-speed Internet connections in rural Minnesota, business executive Kevin Wald sees broadband as another utility – such as the rural water or rural electric associations of today. “It’s no longer a perk,” Wald said. “It is now the new utility of our day and age, of our generation. It’s not just a want, it’s a need.”

State Pulls in Investments from India

Minnesota has attracted more than $1.8 billion and created 2,500 jobs as a direct result of investment from India-based companies, according to the Confederation of India Industry. The numbers are enough to rank Minnesota third among states in investment dollars pouring in from the country. Only Texas and Pennsylvania rank higher.

Applications for TED Program
DEED and the MInnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) are taking applications for funding from the Transportation Economic Development Program. The joint program has $30 million available for transportation infrastructure projects that lead to economic development in Minnesota.  “This innovative collaboration between DEED and MnDOT recognizes that transportation investments and economic development go hand in hand,” said Commissioner Sieben.

Sportech Plans Elk River Expansion
Sportech Inc. will increase its workforce by 43 employees and invest $6.5 million in an expansion of its manufacturing facilities in Elk River. The company, which makes windshields, body panels and screen print parts for motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and other recreational and utility vehicles, plans to build a 105,000-square-foot production facility, with room to expand.

Artist Annie Young received congratulations from Gov. Dayton at the Minnesota History Center during the 25th anniversary celebration recently of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Young, who is a client of State Services for the Blind, received recognition because her artwork was used in banners to promote the event.
