Earlier this year, the Minnesota Judicial Branch launched a new court record website, Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO). MCRO will eventually replace Minnesota Public Access (MPA) Remote as the online access point for Minnesota trial court records.
MCRO is being released in phases. Phase 1 launched in March 2021 and for the first time allowed Minnesotans to access trial court documents online.
MCRO Phase 2 launched on December 7, 2021, and offers a number of improved features. Now, you can search by party name or attorney name and view information about the case, including the registers of actions, upcoming hearings, and judge and attorney information.
To learn more about the functionality of MCRO Phase 2, visit the MCRO website.
Beginning in 2022, when completing their annual attorney registration statement, attorneys will notice three additional required questions related to the aspirational goals stated in Rule 6.1 of the Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct. Two questions ask about approximate hours spent the prior calendar year on pro bono service and activities for improving the law, the legal system, or the legal profession. An additional question, with a checkbox response, asks whether attorneys provided financial support during the prior calendar year to organizations that provide legal services to persons of limited means.
The Minnesota State Law Library and the Minnesota State Bar Association Access to Justice Committee co-sponsored a CLE on December 7, 2021 that discussed the new reporting requirement, what it means for attorneys, and why there is an ongoing need for pro bono and financial support of legal services in our communities. In case you weren't able to attend, the session will soon be available for on-demand credit. Once the credit is approved, you will be able to access it via our on-demand CLE page.
You can find additional answers to frequently asked questions about the reporting requirements on the MSBA website.
The Minnesota Estate Administration Deskbook (pictured) is one of our favorite resources for probate questions. This resource covers every stage of probating an estate in Minnesota, from opening the estate to distributing the estate assets. The deskbook provides clear and complete summaries of Minnesota law on creditors' claims, taxation issues, and real estate. It also contains an exhaustive library of probate forms. We have two print copies of the deskbook in our collection (one circulating, one that is for in-library use only). We can also email you selected forms from the deskbook.
Other Minnesota-specific probate titles in our collection include Stein on Probate and the Minnesota Probate Deskbook. The Minnesota Probate Deskbook is part of the Minnesota Practice series. We have print copies of this title and you can also access the Probate Deskbook using Westlaw at the State Law Library.
You can find other resources on probate by visiting our Probate and Estate Administration subject guide.
