Some people living with depression don't appear sad on the outside. They may continue going to work, caring for their families, socializing and smiling — while quietly struggling with feelings of sadness, hopelessness or emotional exhaustion
Often called "smiling depression," this experience can make it difficult for others to recognize when someone needs support.
Possible signs include:
- Feeling emotionally drained despite appearing "fine"
- Hiding sadness or distress from others
- Loss of interest or joy in activities
- Changes in sleep or appetite
- Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Withdrawing when alone
As we head into September, recognized as Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, we encourage our referral partners to remain aware of the signs that someone may be struggling and to consider prevention strategies that foster connection, support and early intervention in the month ahead.
It's important to remember that mental health challenges aren't always visible. A smile doesn't always tell the whole story.
At CARE Counseling, we have skilled clinicians who provide neuro-affirming care. Meet our CARE team.
