Local organizations are oftentimes at the forefront of creating systemic change in the criminal legal system.
With improved access to relevant data and technology, communities could be better positioned to advocate for and enact policies and practices to make the system more equitable. To further this goal, the Urban Institute and the Microsoft Justice Reform Initiative have collaborated to kick off the next cohort of the Catalyst Grant Program to support 27 organizations across the country as they launch projects using data and technology to advance racial equity in prevention, policing, and prosecution. Examples of this year's projects include:
- analyzing program data so diversion programs can support groups impacted by overincarceration;
- exploring racial disparities in arrests to identify potential changes needed to policing practices in areas like pedestrian and traffic stops; and
- enhancing data and technology tools for court watching programs to increase the transparency of pre-trial decisions and advocate for policy reforms.
Each grantee will receive funds to cover project implementation; assistance on data, policy, and community engagement from Urban; access to Microsoft technology and related support; and peer learning opportunities.
