Training Dates / Times:
January 25th thru January 30th / 11am to 4pm

Training Location: Online
Participants must attend all 6 days and complete all pre and post assignments to meet the educational requirements for certification.

Training cost: $650.00 which includes a $150.00 non-refundable deposit. Payments must be received no later than September 4, 2020. This class will be limited to 20 participants and is on a first come, first serve basis. This training will fill up quickly. Challenges for People Leaving Prison and Jail Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it new challenges for corrections in the United States – and exacerbated old ones. Many prison systems were already operating with severe staffing shortages, and these have grown even more urgent as correctional staff contract COVID and are forced to quarantine. Existing prison and jail buildings often fail to provide adequate appropriate room to quarantine the sick and are not wired for e-learning and telemedicine. Meanwhile, the programs and supports that people rely on to make their transitions out of prison and jail more successful have never been needed more. In particular, while employment is a key concern for many who are reentering their communities, jobs are scarce and legal barriers to employment make accessing those jobs that do exist even harder for those with criminal records. State budget shortfalls leave corrections and reentry leaders with tough decisions at a time when their need for resources is significant. In this session, we will discuss strategies and approaches that states are pursuing to control the growth of their prison populations and budgets, support the success of those who are returning to their communities, and ensure public safety.

The Robina Institute is hiring

Applications are now being accepted for a full-time Research Scholar position. The Research Scholar will primarily work on a variety of projects aimed at promoting and improving practices in parole release decision making and community supervision (probation and parole).

Required Qualifications:

• Completed advanced degree in criminal justice, criminology, public policy, sociology, public administration, or similar field and at least three years of experience or BA/BS and five years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal nine years.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completed PhD or Master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, public policy, sociology, public administration, or a related social-science discipline plus three years of applied research or technical assistance experience.
• Research experience in the criminal justice field.
• Interest in and coursework and/or work experience in the areas of corrections, especially probation, parole, and/or sentencing policy and practice.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals, including faculty, researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
• Ability to work in a collaborative research environment.
• Demonstrated project management skills, including meeting multiple deadlines.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and good judgment; ability to multi‐task effectively.
• Strong quantitative skills and experience with statistical software packages such as SPSS or Stata.
• Experience working with state criminal justice sentencing and corrections data, and familiarity with national data sources.
• Ability to effectively represent the Institute to internal and external constituents, and be respectful of diverse partners and individuals the Institute conducts research with.

Appointment:

100% time, Civil Service position. The Robina Institute is a grant-funded institution. Full funding is available for this position through June 2022, and partial funding is available through December 2022. Continuation beyond that time will be dependent on the Institute’s ability to secure additional funding. This position has the ability to work remotely from a location outside of Minnesota.

MDVA has many Financial Assistance Grants for COVID-19 Relief

On March 26, 2020, the Minnesota State Legislature voted to fund a special appropriation to assist Veterans who may be financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 Specific Programs have been activated specifically in response to mitigate the economic effects COVID-19 is having on our Veterans and their families. These programs can close at any time without notice due to the exhaustion of approved funding. Status updates will be posted here regarding the status of these programs. All of the grants are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, and the amount of grants awarded is limited to the length of existing funding.

State of Minnesota Veterans Day Event to go Virtual

St. Paul, Minn. – The Official State of Minnesota Veterans Day Program will be held virtually this year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Focus: Racism and housing access

Inadequate access to housing is a growing problem in Minnesota, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn. Even while more Minnesotans are finding themselves without homes, it’s clear this trend is hitting some communities harder than others. For example, Black and Indigenous adults are overrepresented in the state’s unsheltered population.

How does racism affect a person’s ability to find a house or apartment and stay there? What are Twin Cities organizations doing to address these persistent racial disparities in homelessness and help more people access housing?

MPR is partnering with Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis on this virtual event to bring awareness, dialogue and potential solutions to the problem of racism in housing access.

The event is part of a series of In Focus convenings MPR is committed to leading over the next year on Minnesota’s persistent racial disparities. Through conversations with community leaders that are shaped by our curious, engaged audience, MPR hopes to encourage new connections and relationships that will help Minnesota communities make progress toward equity and inclusion.
