Metropolitan State University is proud to host the sixth annual Understanding and Responding to Mass Incarceration forum (#URMI2019). The 2019 forum will explore the theme “Women in the System” through featured speakers and women sharing lived experiences of before, during and after incarceration. #URMI2019 aspires to inform various dimensions of mass incarceration, connect change-makers to each other and inspire participants to activate strategies that will make mass incarceration a thing of the past. This event is free for all participants, but registration is required.

This April, join Prison Fellowship® and the University of Northwestern for the third annual Second Chance 5K in Minnesota. Come out with your whole family to walk or run for second chances! While we run at the University of Northwestern, four local prisons will be hosting their own 5K races for our incarcerated brothers and sisters. Each year, the National TASC Conference brings hundreds of individuals from around the country together to explore the latest advancements and issues in the treatment and recovery of justice-involved individuals with behavioral health needs. National TASC is a national membership organization representing TASC programs across the United States. National TASC members are dedicated professionals delivering screening, assessment, referral and case management services to substance-abusing adult and juvenile offender populations. Our mission is to offer leadership, advocacy, and policy recommendations for innovative treatment and recovery supports resulting in opportunities for justice-involved individuals with behavioral health needs to achieve healthy and productive lives with their families and communities.

Justice involved women and girls enter and exist in the criminal justice system with their whole beings. They bring life experiences rooted in identity-- race, class, ability, sexuality and more. How are we as service providers meeting the needs of women and girls at the margins? How do our institutions and programs account for these identities? This conference will begin to shed light on the specific traits, strengths and needs of women and girls at the margins. We will explore marginality and intersectionality through both a systems and personal lens. Our event will be emceed by the amazing Dr. Joi Lewis of Joi Unlimited.

April 19, 2019 Boots to Business Reboot flyerBoots to Business Reboot is an entrepreneurial education and training program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The course provides an overview of entrepreneurship and applicable business ownership fundamentals. Veterans of all eras, Active Duty Service members (including National Guard and Reserve), and spouses are eligible to participate.
During Reboot, participants are introduced to the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to launch a business, including steps for developing business concepts, how to develop a business plan, and information on SBA resources available to help. The program is facilitated by subject matter experts from the SBA and their extensive network of skilled business advisors.
Participants that complete an in-person B2B Reboot course can elect to further their study through one of many B2B online courses, offered at no cost to Service members, Veterans and military spouses. Second Chance Act Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is accepting applications for the the 2019 Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children Program, which is funded through the Second Chance Act. This program provides funding to promote and expand services for incarcerated parents and their minor children younger than 18, and helps children of incarcerated parents gain more access to services that support their needs. The program will also provide states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents and their minor children. Program activities include developing strategies to increase and enhance communication between the child and his or her incarcerated parent while maintaining safe facilities, providing transitional reentry services that incorporate a focus on parental responsibility, and supporting the delivery of community-based services to meet the needs of minor children with an incarcerated parent. Applications are due by April 15.
Implementing the PREA Standards, Protecting Inmates, and Safeguarding Communities
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is seeking applications for funding of projects designed to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in confinement facilities, and to achieve and maintain compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. This program furthers DOJ’s mission by reducing violent crime and promoting law enforcement officer safety. Deadline is May 22, 2019
Research and Evaluation in Safety, Health, and Wellness in the Criminal Justice System
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for research in four areas: (1) the cumulative effects of shift-work schedules, overtime, and secondary employment on the health, safety, performance, and quality of life of police or correctional officers; (2) enhancing strategies for officer interaction with individuals presenting with mental illness; (3) understanding the impact and management of stress, burnout, and vicarious trauma to advance resiliency of the forensic science workforce; and (4) understanding the impact of undercover work on officer wellness. This program furthers the Department’s mission by sponsoring research to provide objective, independent, evidence based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels. 2018 study finds 10,233 people experiencing homelessness in Minnesota – a 10 percent increase from 2015. Every three years, Wilder Research conducts a statewide survey of people experiencing homelessness or living in temporary housing programs. The 2018 study took place on October 25, 2018, and included two components that captured information on that date: 1) face-to-face interviews with people throughout the state who were experiencing homelessness and 2) a count of people experiencing homelessness. Criminal Justice Reform Organizations Support Cuomo’s “mugshot ban”
Various criminal justice advocacy organizations strongly support Governor Cuomo’s amendment to the State’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) that would ban the public disclosure of photos and booking information compiled by law enforcement agencies when they make arrests, mirroring policies already in place in federal agencies.
Housing as a Critical Component of Reentry Webinar
On March 18, 2019, SAMHSA’s GAINS Center hosted the Housing as a Critical Component of Reentry webinar. The webinar provided information on promising reentry programs. These programs highlighted the importance of housing access when working with justice-involved individuals reentering their communities.
