Sex Offender Treatment Program Quarter Break Job Interviewing Class

MCF-Lino Lakes Sex Offender Treatment Program (SOTP) is preparing for quarter break and the quarterly Job Interviewing Class. We are looking for volunteers to conduct practice mock interviews for the offenders to work on their interviewing skills in preparation of their release. This is a great way to take a break from your normal work routine and provide the men in our program who will be releasing within the next three – nine months with the practice they need to seek employment.
Class for the practice/mock job interviews will be on the afternoon of Friday, March 29th. This starts with a Thank You luncheon & orientation for the volunteers at 11:45am (in J-3/Carver). At 1:00 we will gather with the SOTP offenders for an overview and then the rest of the afternoon (until 3:45) will be spent in doing mock interviews with the program participants and providing them with valuable feedback on their interview strengths and ways in which they can improve their interviewing skills.
Please let Mary Cardinal know that you are interested and available by 3/22/19 (this allows time for getting the security paperwork done on time). If you are not a DOC employee, send a photo copy (pictures taken from phones or scanned images work the best) of your driver’s license with your RSVP. Then just show up on 3/29/19 between 11:30 & 11:45 at the MCF-LL main lobby and check in.
The public talk and policy panel with Bruce Western is scheduled for Friday, April 5th, from 1:30pm-3:30pm. We will start with a brief presentation from Dr. Western, followed by a response panel, and then audience Q&A. The response panel includes:

The talk will be held at the Mayo Auditorium on the East Bank and is open to the public. Professor Western's book will be on sale at the event. Continuing Legal Education An application for 2 Continuing Legal Education Credits (CLE) will be submitted. This event is free and open to the public.
Health Disparities Round Table – Immigration Policy Reform: Implications for Public Health Practice

The Health Disparities Round Table is an annual event at the end of Public Health Week. The purpose of the round table is to bring national and local speakers to campus to discuss emerging issues in health and racial equity research, policy and/or practice.
This year’s event will discuss the impact of current approaches to immigration policy on public health and healthcare delivery systems. Speakers will focus on addressing what policy reforms or interventions are needed to improve the health of immigrant populations affected by current U.S. immigration policy.

Understanding and Responding to Mass Incarceration: Women in the System
Metropolitan State University is proud to host the sixth annual Understanding and Responding to Mass Incarceration forum (#URMI2019). Justice involved women and girls enter and exist in the criminal justice system with their whole beings. They bring life experiences rooted in identity-- race, class, ability, sexuality and more. How are we as service providers meeting the needs of women and girls at the margins? How do our institutions and programs account for these identities? This conference will begin to shed light on the specific traits, strengths and needs of women and girls at the margins. We will explore marginality and intersectionality through both a systems and personal lens. Our event will be emceed by the amazing Dr. Joi Lewis of Joi Unlimited.

Minneapolis VA Vietnam Veteran Recognition Day Event
March 29, 2019 Vietnam Veterans are invited to attend the Vietnam Veteran Recognition event on Friday, March 29, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. April 19, 2019 Boots to Business Reboot flyerBoots to Business Reboot is an entrepreneurial education and training program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The course provides an overview of entrepreneurship and applicable business ownership fundamentals. Veterans of all eras, Active Duty Service members (including National Guard and Reserve), and spouses are eligible to participate.
During Reboot, participants are introduced to the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to launch a business, including steps for developing business concepts, how to develop a business plan, and information on SBA resources available to help. The program is facilitated by subject matter experts from the SBA and their extensive network of skilled business advisors.
Participants that complete an in-person B2B Reboot course can elect to further their study through one of many B2B online courses, offered at no cost to Service members, Veterans and military spouses. Second Chance Act Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is accepting applications for the the 2019 Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children Program, which is funded through the Second Chance Act. This program provides funding to promote and expand services for incarcerated parents and their minor children younger than 18, and helps children of incarcerated parents gain more access to services that support their needs. The program will also provide states and localities with funding to implement positive family engagement strategies and activities that address the needs of incarcerated parents and their minor children. Program activities include developing strategies to increase and enhance communication between the child and his or her incarcerated parent while maintaining safe facilities, providing transitional reentry services that incorporate a focus on parental responsibility, and supporting the delivery of community-based services to meet the needs of minor children with an incarcerated parent. Applications are due by April 15.
Implementing the PREA Standards, Protecting Inmates, and Safeguarding Communities
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is seeking applications for funding of projects designed to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in confinement facilities, and to achieve and maintain compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. This program furthers DOJ’s mission by reducing violent crime and promoting law enforcement officer safety. Deadline is May 22, 2019
Research and Evaluation in Safety, Health, and Wellness in the Criminal Justice System
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for research in four areas: (1) the cumulative effects of shift-work schedules, overtime, and secondary employment on the health, safety, performance, and quality of life of police or correctional officers; (2) enhancing strategies for officer interaction with individuals presenting with mental illness; (3) understanding the impact and management of stress, burnout, and vicarious trauma to advance resiliency of the forensic science workforce; and (4) understanding the impact of undercover work on officer wellness. This program furthers the Department’s mission by sponsoring research to provide objective, independent, evidence based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels.
