The 2018 NAMI Minnesota State Conference: Transforming Attitudes will be held Nov. 3, at the St. Paul RiverCentre

Keynote speakers include Daniel E. Dawes and Sam Miltich. The conference is sponsored in part by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Community Supports Administration; Medica; Accra; River Oaks of Minnesota; Reed Psychological Services, PLLC; Vail Place; Geritom Medical, Inc; Northwood Children's Services; Ellie Family Services; and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Breakouts: this year's conference will feature 18 breakout sessions, with sessions for professionals, individuals living with mental illnesses, family members, advocates, and students. Full breakout information is available here.

CEUs: the 2018 NAMI Minnesota State Conference has been approved for 5 CEU hours for social workers by the Minnesota Board of Social Work; LPCs, LPCCs, and LADCs by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy; and LMFTs by the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. This event has been designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing's continuing education requirements. It is the individual licensee's responsibility to ensure that this event meets their continuing education requirements.

Cost: registration is $60 for members, $100 for non-members, or $35 for students. Lunch is included. Limited partial scholarships for youth and adults are available - contact Briana Libby at blibby@namimn.org for more information. This full-day conference addresses the challenges that individuals face after criminal conviction including access to housing, employment, parenting, and voting rights. Presented by the Hamline Center for Justice and Law and the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition.

Presenter Bio:Odell Wilson III has been employed in the District of Minnesota’s U.S. Federal Probation Office for the past 21 years.  He began his career as a supervision officer and then transferred to the presentence unit before returning to the supervision unit where he remained working with moderate to high risk offenders.  He has been a trainer for the Federal Judicial Center since 2001 and has provided training for the federal courts throughout the country.  In 2008 he was promoted to Senior U.S. Probation Officer as an employment/community reentry specialist.  In October 2014, Odell was promoted to Supervising U.S. Probation Officer and currently supervises probation officers responsible for providing pretrial and post-conviction supervision for the District of Minnesota.  He also is involved in reentry services where he is responsible for providing employment and other services to offenders who are transitioning to the community.

Workshop: Labor Market Information to Assist Individuals with Criminal Backgrounds

  •  Monday, November 19th, from 1-4 PM
  • North Minneapolis Workforce Center, 800 West Broadway

Details: This 3-hour, hands-on training session will help attendees learn where to find and how to use the most relevant data tools to understand the local economy and provide the best guidance to job seekers that have criminal backgrounds. Attendees will navigate our website to gain experience with the data tools. This is a great session for WorkForce Center staff and partners in the workforce development system who work with ex-offenders. Topics include:

  • Occupations in Demand and Current Job Vacancy Results
  • Occupational and Industry Employment Projections
  • Wage and Salary Data and Career Profiles
  • Cost of Living
  • Graduate Employment Outcomes
  • Other data tools may also be covered upon request.

This training is interactive and participants will benefit from bringing a laptop to use to go through the data tools. This training session offers CEUs for GCDF certification.

Speakers:

Tim O'Neill is DEED's regional analyst for the seven-county Twin Cities region of Minnesota. He has a bachelor's degree in history and political science from St. Olaf College in Northfield and a master's degree in public policy from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Mark Schultz is a regional analyst with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). He previously worked as an offender specialist at the Winona Workforce Center and as a corrections officer. Mark has a master's degree in sociology, with an emphasis on criminology and inequality, from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Our Community’s Untapped Workforce: A Discussion of Why and How to Hire Job...

In a tight labor market where businesses of all types and sizes need employees, companies are looking to meet demand by hiring ex-offenders. This strategy has not only a positive ROI for the hiring business, but for society as a whole.

Join the Northwest Private Industry Council as we host a series of important conversations about this workforce strategy. The event includes an opening keynote presentation from Emily Baxter founder of the organization We Are All Criminals, a panel discussion with local businesses and services providers currently implementing these strategies, and a valuable learnings from Jacquelyn Carpenter with Twin Cities Rise who will walk attendees though the recently published Minnesota Fair Chance Hiring Guide.

After a break for lunch (provided), we will continue our disucssion of workforce strategies, including picking up on the Live + Work conversation for workforce attaraction strategies.
