A Trauma-Informed Understanding of Maternal Mental Health in the Criminal Justice System
Date: Friday, May 18, 2018 Presenter: Diana Barnes, Psy.D.
Description: Current research supports a trauma-informed approach to understanding the origins of mental illness. Even in the courtroom, an individual’s history of trauma often serves as a mitigating factor in sentencing. Our early experiences set up expectations and response patterns for other situations and circumstances across the lifespan. Numerous studies indicate that for women with histories of complex childhood trauma, there is an elevated risk for mental illness, including psychosis around the child-bearing years. Although postpartum psychosis is rare, the potential for infanticide exists in women who are not treated. This training provides an overview of postpartum psychosis including prevalence, risk factors, symptoms and outcomes looking at maternal mental health within the context of the criminal justice system... Youth Health Equity Model of Practice Summer Fellowship
Application deadline February 19, 2018
One of the challenges in the effort to combat health disparities in the United States is the growing shortage of qualified and diverse health professionals in all aspects of public health. As the cultural landscape of this country evolves, it is critical that the emerging faces of the public health workforce reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity in communities across the U.S.
In the face of these challenges, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) understands the tremendous contribution that young adults can make in reducing health disparities and is dedicated to advancing and disseminating knowledge in the field of health equity. To this end, OMH has launched the Youth Heath Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP).
YHEMOP provides Health Equity Fellowships to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students interested in a career in health. These fellowships provide hands on, “in the field” learning opportunities through short-term, project-based placements in diverse organizations or institutions that promote health equity and/or addresses health disparities.
To learn more and register visit the Office of Minority Health website.
