Job seekers, high school graduates can get training to build LRT extensions!

To help people develop the skills to land light rail construction jobs, the Metropolitan Council and its Southwest Project Office are working with several organizations to offer 10 weeks of free union-led training for up to 80 people and six weeks of training for 10 soon-to-be high school graduates. “The goal is to prepare people to become apprentices at the end of the 10-week programs,” said Jon Vang, a Metropolitan Council equal opportunity consultant assigned to the two LRT projects.

The first 10-week training round begins April 17 for 40 unemployed and underemployed adults. The second 10-week training program for an additional 40 people begins June 5, and the application deadline is May 26. For 2017 high school graduates, their six-week course begins July 10 and the application deadline is June 23

Minnesota opens new savings plan for people with disabilities

Minnesotans with disabilities and their families can save for goods and services to improve their lives under the new Minnesota ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Plan, which opened this month.

The plan allows a maximum of $14,000 a year, to a total maximum of $100,000, to be contributed to an account for an individual before the individual's public benefits are affected.  Participants can choose to put their money into what operates as a regular checking account or into one of six investment options. Any person can contribute to an ABLE account. Contributions can be made by check, through an employer's payroll direct deposit, or directly from another checking or savings account.
