suicide prevention

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month helps promote resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention, how you can help others and how to talk about suicide without increasing the risk of harm.

Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicide is is often the result of mental health conditions that affect people when they are most vulnerable. Suicidal thoughts and suicide occur too frequently but should not be considered common and can indicate more serious issues. In many cases the individuals, friends and families affected by suicide are left in dark, feeling shame or stigma that prevents talking openly about issues dealing with the suicide.

Learn more here.

NAMI offers many suicide prevention classes for the community and for professionals that are open to the public. For a complete list, please click here.

The “We Are All Criminals” presentation describes the explosive rate of incarceration in the United State and the impact on families and communities.

Emily Baxter, director of We Are All Criminals, is a former public defender and criminal justice reform lobbyist. Her work goes on to explore the lifelong advantages that the other 75% of us receive by avoiding arrest for youthful indiscretions, Traffic violations, petty drug offenses, shoplifting…criminal records can have a profound impact on one’s life; like finding employment and renting affordable housing, criminal records can impose barriers to moving forward. Poor communities and people of color tend to be penalized at a disproportionate rate. Social workers and students, doctors and lawyers, retailers and retires- all tell stories of crimes they got away with, and consider how different their lives would have been had they been caught. What’s your story?
