GED Now Free for Minnesotans!!!

If you live in Minnesota and are interested in taking the General Educational Development (GED) Test, it is now free to anyone living in the state through June 30, 2016. You can either register online at the GED website or contact your local school district to connect with their Adult Basic Education program. Staff at each program will be able to walk you through the registration process and also provide resources and classes to prepare for taking the test.

In Minnesota, individuals who do not have a high school diploma may be able to earn a state of Minnesota GED® Diploma by passing the General Educational Development Test. The four tests in the GED battery measure academic competencies similar to many of those required of a Minnesota high school graduate.

If you are 19 years of age and are not currently enrolled in high school, you are eligible to take the GED® in Minnesota. If you are 17 or 18 years old and are not currently enrolled in high school, apply for an age waiver before testing. The waiver form and instructions are available below. In addition to the form, you will need to bring a valid, current government-issued photo ID to the testing site.

MCCA

Minnesota Community Corrections Association Training

When: Friday, June 17, 2016, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Where: Goodwill/Easter Seals, 553 Fairview Avenue North, St. Paul, MN 55104

Presenter: Linda Eagle Speaker

Training Summary

Linda Eagle Speaker will present from a personal and historical perspective about the First Person experience in residential boarding school. Given the prevalence of American Indian women in the criminal justice system, it is important for criminal justice professionals to understand this history, which had and continues to have a traumatic impact on many American Indian people and families. Also learn what the Minnesota Indian Women Resource Center is doing to heal the effects of First Person trauma.

Online registrations will be given first priority, and trainings are free to all current MCCA members. If you are currently an MCCA member, please go to mnmcca.com to sign in and register for the training. If you are not a member, please sign up at mnmcca.com for a membership. A $35 training fee will be due at the time of registration. This annual investment pays for one year of monthly training sessions and your MCCA membership. Questions can be directed to Christen Munn, director of membership, at cmunn@goodwilleasterseals.org.

Register Now for Webinar: Homeless Services 101, What Reentry Service Providers Need to Know

Hosted by the National Reentry Resource Center, with funding support from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance

Date: Wednesday, June 22
Time: 2–3:30 p.m. ET

Register Here!

Accessing stable, affordable housing is vital to successful reentry. Individuals experiencing homelessness are more likely to be arrested than those who are stably housed, and people with criminal records are more likely to become homeless than those without. Those who exit jail or prison to emergency shelters or the streets are more likely to re-offend. This relationship between homelessness and contact with the criminal justice system is frequently complicated by mental and behavioral health concerns. In this webinar, presenters will:

  • Cover some basic facts about homelessness, and how homelessness intersects with the criminal justice system;
  • Discuss potential solutions to homelessness, and how homeless services and access to temporary and supportive housing are delivered through local Department of Housing and Urban Development-funded Continuums of Care (CoCs); and

Discuss how reentry service providers can work better with their local CoCs, and how to better serve people experiencing homelessness or risk of homelessness.
