The sun is finally out again, and it sure feels good as we head into the holiday weekend.
I would like to invite you to our annual Memorial Day Ceremony at noon on Monday, May 26 at the Lake Ann Park Al Klinglehutz Memorial Pavilion. It is a wonderful service honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. I hope you can join us on Monday.
Solicitors
This time of year, we start to see an increased number of solicitors. The best way to ensure you don’t get an unwelcome knock at your door is by having a “No Solicitors” sign. These stickers are available for free at City Hall.
The city does not administer badges for solicitors. Per our city attorney, cities do not have the right to deny individuals to sell products or services (Watchtower Bible & Tract Society v. Village of Stratton (2002) and the Dormant Commerce Clause). While we recognize residents preferred the city issue badges, it gave residents a false sense of security that the business/person was legitimate when the city has no ability to verify or vet them.
A resident who displays the “No Solicitors” sign and still has a peddler or solicitor attempt to make contact or does not leave when asked should call the Carver County Non-Emergency number (952.361.1231) or 911. Be prepared to state the situation, and give a concise description of the peddler, his/her vehicle, and the direction of travel. Residents should also call if you notice any suspicious activity with the peddler (such as looking into vehicles or garages, refuses to leave property, etc.) or have a reasonable fear or concern for your safety. A deputy will be dispatched to talk with the peddler.
Minnetonka Middle School West
On Monday, the City Council elected not to award a construction contract for the proposed Minnetonka Middle School roundabout due to the bid coming in high and resulting in a funding gap. The majority of the funding is coming from the state and a MnDot grant, as the project is on State Highway 41, with additional funding from the school district and city. We will continue to advocate for funding from our state legislators as we believe this is an important project, but at this time, the project is on hold.
