Hello Chanhassen Residents
I hope you are doing well as we climb out of the deep freeze. Below you will find an update on issues currently before the City Council.
Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center
After multiple rounds of interviews and discussions, the City Council selected BKV Group on Wednesday as the community center's architecture and engineering firm. We are excited to work together on a space designed to be enjoyed by all ages and interests. The goal is to create spaces for sports, leisure and community gatherings. We want this venue to proudly represent Chanhassen on a regional level. We will hold open houses for our residents to provide feedback as we move through the design process.
Avienda Development
Doran Companies will host a neighborhood open house on March 25 at the Chanhassen Rec Center from 5-7 p.m. While the City Council has not reviewed a formal application, Doran Companies has a purchase agreement with Level 7 with the intent to build apartment units at Avienda. Doran Companies will share their overall concept and invite feedback on the plan. We expect to receive a formal application in early April. Please follow the Avienda Development project page for updates.
Pleasantview Road Project
Pleasantview Road has been on the city’s road project improvement plan for many years. The city recognized the challenging aspects of this road and recently took advantage of a funding opportunity through MnDOT to hire a consultant to evaluate and prepare a project scope for a future grant opportunity. The city received a conceptual design for Pleasantview Road that would cost $20 million given the expansive changes, design ideas, and storm water management plans. While impressive in nature, the City Council decided not to move forward due to its high cost, impact on private property, and other concerns. City Council is still interested in improving Pleasantview Road, but just not at that scale. At the Council's direction, the city did not submit the grant proposal.
We plan to hold a neighborhood open house in May/June to discuss the scope of a future road project and to hear from residents. We will communicate the details closer to that time. Please make sure you sign up for project updates on the City of Chanhassen's website to stay informed.
Senate Visit
I want to extend a big "thank you" to Senator Julia Coleman for authoring a bill for a sales tax exemption on construction materials for the new community center. These savings are around $1.7 million and will lower the burden on our taxpayers. Sen. Coleman, thank you for your ongoing support of the City of Chanhassen. It was an honor to visit you and testify before the Senate Tax Committee.
Chanhassen City Manager Laurie Hokkanen, Mayor Elise Ryan and Sen. Julia Coleman
Market Blvd.
The City Council will provide final direction for the reconstruction of Market Blvd. on Monday, February 24 at our Work Session meeting. Please review the concept here and provide any additional feedback you may have. This is a major project that will improve the traffic, pedestrian, and bicyclist movement in our growing downtown.
