Hello Chanhassen Residents
It is hard to believe the City Council held its final Monday night meeting on December 9th. It was a big year for the city, and I appreciate the hard work of staff and council as well as the engagement from our residents. Thank you for your continued involvement and communication.
Final Levy
On Monday, the City Council approved the final levy. With the preliminary levy set at 6.9%, we made adjustments and approved a 6.3% increase for an operating levy of $16.2 million. The following charts illustrate property tax impact, a breakdown of your property tax statement, how we compare to neighboring towns and cities of equivalent size, and the annual cost of city services.

Ordinance Approvals
- With the successful passing of a local option sales tax to fund the Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center, we approved the ordinance on Monday. Pending completion of the process requirements, the 0.5% local sales tax will be effective on April 1, 2025. More details related to the Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center development and community engagement will be forthcoming in 2025.
- The state legislature approved the legalization of cannabis; therefore, municipalities needed to pass an ordinance regulating the licensing associated with cannabis and lower-potency hemp edible businesses and temporary cannabis events. The retail licensing authority is Carver County and Chanhassen has limited its number of retail licenses to three (3). In the new year, the city council will be considering zoning and buffering requirements.
Fiber Installation
Thank you for the questions and feedback related to the fiber installation across the city. The flags, the digging, and the disruption can be frustrating. I get it. My front and side yard have plenty of flags, holes, and equipment in them. We are working closely with the companies to ensure effective and responsive communication to any issues. The work will begin to slow starting December 21 and be limited throughout the winter months. I understand the challenges of working within your property’s easements, but I hope the long-term benefits will outweigh them. Again, fiber access was consistently the most frequent request coming from our residents and businesses. Thank you for your patience.
Thank you
Finally, thank you to all who attended the tree lighting ceremony in downtown Chanhassen. Despite the new location (due to the Civic Campus work), we had incredible attendance. Please enjoy the beauty of the lights in our downtown and embrace the magic of the season. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday with special thanks to our armed forces who continue to protect and serve at home and abroad.
