Hello Chanhassen Residents,
Please see below for an update on city business.
Panhandlers
We have received numerous inquiries on the panhandling in downtown Chanhassen. Understandably, this is not a welcomed activity; however, there are limitations on what can be done. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that panhandling is protected under the First Amendment’s protection of speech. However, in communication with our Sheriff, Minnesota law prohibits a person from standing on a roadway for purposes of soliciting employment, business, or contributions from the occupant of any vehicle. The Carver County Sheriff’s Office will be asking the panhandlers to clear from roadways for traffic safety purposes. We hope this action mitigates the panhandling as we recognize the concern.
Short-term Rental Properties
The City Council has decided to pursue an ordinance change requiring a rental license for short-term rental properties. Over the past few years VRBO’s and Airbnb’s have grown in popularity and with it have come challenges. Complaints (noise, trash, parking) from neighbors have created a need for a licensing process to allow for license revocation should a rental property violate the nuisance ordinances. This change will go through the public process for feedback starting with a Planning Commission meeting on September 6 and City Council on September 26.
Elections
We had a great turnout on Tuesday for the state Primary races. Thank you to our City Clerk and Election Judges for their hard work and for ensuring everything ran smoothly. The one noticeable question was around polling location. With the recent redistricting, many polling places have changed, so please follow this link to ensure you know your voting location for Election Day, November 8, 2022.
Avienda Village Update
Thank you to the many residents who attended the meeting last night - it was a great turn-out. The developer will be meeting with city staff to review the questions, comments, and suggestions. For the full staff report, please follow this link. If you were unable to attend, you may submit questions to public comments or attend the Planning Commission meeting and Public Hearing on August 16 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
Youth Commissioners
Congratulations to Alexandra Jerdee (Parks & Recreation Commission) and Julia Adams (Environmental Commission) on being reappointed by the City Council to their respective Commissions. They will be serving a second, one-year term. Both young ladies have been invaluable members of the commission offering an important perspective on city business. Our future is bright with leaders like Alex and Julia!
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments: eryan@chanhassenmn.gov.
Warmest Regards,
Elise Ryan Mayor of Chanhassen
