In 2019 BBAY launched the Stop Drop and Enroll research to learn from 1st-year students at Hennepin Technical College and North Hennepin Community College why they dropped out or stopped out (left and returned). This research led us to 2 years of collective action to address the issues we found to helped to increase student retention. To learn more about the results of this work you can go here:
Today we launch a NEW campaign, building on what we have learned, to promote college and career access, to make sure every resident knows about this NEW opportunity offered by the State of Minnesota Office of Higher Education.
BROOKLYN BRIDGE ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE THE NORTHSTAR PROMISE - FREE COLLEGE TUITION AND FEES
In May of 2023 Minnesota passed the Free college Bill (HF2073); ensuring free college tuition and fees at state colleges and universities for students who earn less than $80,000 per year. When this was announced, BBAY staff asked youth what they thought, their response… “it won’t matter because how will anyone even know about this?” Lack of awareness and failure to promote opportunities like the NorthStar Promise often leaves families on the outside.
To address this issue, BBAY along with BrookLynk and community partners; and with the support of the Cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, is launching a local effort to ensure that every resident in our cities who is eligible, knows about and can access the NorthStar Promise. Through our collaborative, culturally responsive, direct outreach with residents, we hope to increase their ability to access higher education, especially for individuals in our cities who have not benefited from existing pathways to college and career resources.
